EVENT HISTORY & DETAILS

The annual event was first founded in the spring of 2006, when The Mendiburu Magic Foundation (MMF) invited family, friends, and community to come together for good times and lasting memories.  This breathtaking extravaganza is a cross-cultural experience where the combination of spirits and cuisine create spectacular!  You have never seen anything like this...guests are treated to a spectacular blend of Basque and Hispanic culture that is highlighted by an evening of awards, dinner, dancing, entertainment, and raffle.  All proceeds from the event will benefit Mendiburu Magic Foundation, based in Bakersfield, California.

The Mendiburu Magic Foundation (MMF) is a non-profit public benefit organization that is a recognized 501c3 entity, according to the United States Internal Revenue Service.  MMF was founded in loving memory of Nancy Ann Mendiburu on June 19, 2000.  The organization will directly contribute to worthy community need, and in particular (1) help children and families affected by any catastrophic or life threatening illness, (2) community impact programs with an emphasis on positive youth development, and (3) ongoing medical research for cancer.  MMF will strive to accomplish these worthy tasks while appreciating the purpose of human life as being to serve, and show compassion and the will to help others.

It is easy to make a buck but it's a lot tougher to make a difference in life.  In recognition of Mrs. Mendiburu's admirable and courageous fight against cancer and personal compassion for others, the foundation will strive to put a face on this dreadful disease and effect healthy community strategy overall.

CATASTROPHIC OR LIFE-THREATENING ILLNESS:  During times of catastrophic or life threatening illness for children ages 0-17, MMF provides those families assistance in creating "Everlasting Memories" and improving "Quality of Life."  With decreasing public support, increasing financial burdens due to these medical conditions, and the challenge of balancing all of these factors, our families are frequently stressed and overwhelmed with initial diagnosis and treatment.  Our public-benefit organization tries to assist families by relieving these stressors and contributing towards healthy community strategy.  MMF will establish separate and distinct monetary assistance funds at local area hospitals (Mendiburu Magic Funds) by which area residents can work closely with an assigned Health-Care Social Worker and access these monies and/or related social services related to individual cases.

Illness is a devastating reality that strikes children indiscriminately--leaving families emotionally and financially exhausted.  The efforts of MMF can help ease these burdens and help provide much needed life-long memories and a better quality of life during a trying time.  For when it is all said and done, that is all there is for anyone of us...memories and action.

CANCER RESEARCH:  The organization affirms the importance of scientific research and investigations of new approaches to cancer and any sort of life threatening illness detection, treatment, and prevention.  Therefore, we strive to make annual contributions towards accredited cancer research and/or health issues related to our mission.  In addition, MMF also honors “outstanding community contributions” in Health-Care, Innovative Cancer Research Programs, and Social Work at our annual awards dinner and fundraiser.  See www.pyreneesfiesta.org or contact our office for nomination forms.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT:  MMF has created three distinctive divisions to promote and support positive youth development programs; that are related to character building and social enrichment.

  • The foundation names outstanding graduating high-school seniors (Nancy Ann Mendiburu Scholarship Fund) each academic school year, in partnership with the Kern High School District, due by May 1 of each year.
  • The foundation solicits requests from area non-profit organizations, in the form of annual mini-grants not to exceed $3,000.00 per allocation.  The mini-grant proposals must facilitate any worthy community asset related to our mission and/or youth development project serving youth in Kern County.  These proposals are due by July 1 of each calendar year.
  • Since 2000, the foundation has partnered with Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County to proudly name the Nancy Ann Mendiburu Youth of the Year.  The awards ceremony/selection is coordinated by local Boys & Girls Club staff and the award recipient is automatically qualified as a regional candidate representing the Western United States.  In addition, MMF also offers annual mini-grants to existing youth development partners, and honors “outstanding community contributions” in Youth Development at our annual awards dinner and fundraiser.  See www.pyreneesfiesta.org or contact our office for nomination forms.

Our vision will enable MMF to be responsive to requests by citizens within the Central California region and especially County of Kern.  MMF will strive to accomplish these worthy tasks while appreciating the purpose of human life as being to serve, and show compassion and the will to help others.  As a non-profit charitable organization we depend solely on the community for funding and hope you will find a way to help us continue our mission and grow its reach.

THE PYRENEES-FIESTA

Just think of one big party with family and friends.  You will be eating good food.  You will be drinking good wine.  You will be laughing and dancing.  You will be seeing old friends and hugging old neighbors.  You will be learning.  You will be listening.  You will be advocating.  You can feel the warmth; you can sense the history and tradition.  You can appreciate the party atmosphere.  You will smile.  You will be right smack in the middle of two cultures that exist in a unique and harmonious blend of cultural heritage that has never been seen before.

As most of you know; the beautiful “Pyrenees” Mountain range in Europe separates both France and Spain (Basque Country) and the “Fiesta” means party in Spanish!  Our founders and host(s), Brian & Valerie Mendiburu have invited friends and family from throughout the community (300-500 guests) to celebrate the foundation and have a great time, while advocating for and investing in critical and essential community projects.  During the program, the foundation will recognize and pay tribute to “Outstanding Community Members” in youth development, social work, public education, and health services.

The fun is just getting started…after the formal awards ceremony and dinner, the Pyrenees-Fiesta will get started…dancing, drinking, raffle…lasting memories!  From good ole’ fashioned French bread, cheese and wine like in the ole’ Basque country…to tequila, dancing, and Mariachi, you will want to be on the guest list for sure!  All proceeds from the annual event will benefit Mendiburu Magic Foundation and related charity organizations.  Entertainment is provided by Red Shoe Productions and Thee Majestics.

Prehistoric man came to the western foothills of the Pyrenees (mountain range that separates France and Spain) in search of a place to settle and live. Close to the natural border formed by the mountains that stretch across the land joining the Iberian peninsula to the rest of Europe, he found what he was looking for.

The Basques have lived uninterruptedly in this small region since the beginnings of recorded time.  By maintaining their age-old cultural traditions, and keeping their historic identity alive, the Basques provide a link with man’s distant past.  Euskara, the Basque language, is said to be the oldest surviving language in Europe.  The Basque Country covers a surface area of 20,664 square kilometres at the western end of the Pyrenees on the Bay of Biscay. Today it consists of seven herrialdes, or districts which, for political and administrative purposes, form part of two different European countries: Araba, Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and Nafarroa are in Spain, and Lapurdi, Zuberoa and Benafarroa are in France.

Three of the Basque Homeland’s seven historic territories, Araba, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa , in the north of Spain, covering a total surface area of 7,234 square kilometres, are grouped together to form a political unit known as EUSKADI, or the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country.

At the age of 54, Nancy Ann Mendiburu lost her six year battle with ovarian cancer on June 19, 2000 and is now survived by her husband of thirty (30) years, Juan Mendiburu and two sons, John Gary and Brian. The two brothers are responsible for the daily operation of the organization.  Her four sisters and one brother all live in California as well and all members of the family have an active and vital role in its daily operation.  Valerie Mendiburu (Brian’s wife) serves as the foundation’s Vice President of Public Affairs and the official Pyrenees-Fiesta hostess.
